WSPFG Dodgeball

Welcome to the Western States Police & Fire Games Dodgeball Tournament

We would like to give a BIG SHOUT OUT to the Santa Clarita Sports Complex for donating the use of their facility. The gymnasium is incredible and Judy and her staff was very helpful and delightful to work with! We also want to give a BIG SHOUT OUT to Sgt. Randy Levinson for putting this event together and getting SCDA involved. It was GREAT working with Randy, Robb and their crew.

Most of all we would like to THANK everyone who participated in the tournament. Teams came as far as Boise Idaho to compete in this years event.

It was a FUN filled day of Dodgeball at it's finest! The day started off with round robin play to decide which top 16 teams would make the tournament. Teams battled back and forth, playing each other 3 games for points to decide who would get the top seed in the tournament bracket. After 3 hours of round robin play and 27 games each per team, the seeds were decided. In the North region the top seed went to ADA County (Boise, Idaho) and the top seed in the South region went to the NADS (Newhall, Ca.)

The first round in tournament play saw no major upsets, the top seeded teams breezed through to the next round. The second round saw a major upset with Average Jake's taking out the 2nd seeded team of Swamp Moose, otherwise all top seeds again mowed through the competition. The 3rd round featured the Final Four teams, in the North Region #1 Seed ADA County -vs- #2 Seed Swatty Balls, and South Region #1 Seed NADS -vs- #6 Seed Average Jakes.

The North Region Finals game was a championship cali bur game. The #1 Seed ADA County got all they could handle with the #2 Seed Swatty Balls. They went back and forth taking one game each before the final game, where ADA County clinched the victory to propel them into the Finals. In the South Region Finals we saw #1 See NADS go up against #6 Seed Avergae Jakes. It was close for awhile but the NADS pulled away to a convincing victory.

Both losing teams in each Regional Finals were automatically qualified for the Bronze Medal game. We saw Swatty Balls -vs- Average Jakes. Swatty Balls eliminated Average Jakes in easy fashion and thereby clinched the Bronze Medal.

All eyes stared at the Final Court where we were witnessing the top #1 Seeds in each Region go head to head. The NADS opened the game with acrobatic maneuvers and dominated the first game clinching a 1-0 lead going into the 2nd game. Game #2 saw a repeat of the NADS dominance and again gave them and easy victory over ADA County. With only one game left for the NADS to win, they could feel the Gold Medal around their necks. Game #3 began with a survival of the fittest mentality for ADA County, knowing if they lose again it was over. ADA County came out firing, looking like the team that dominated in the Round Robin Play and the earlier rounds of the tournament. One by one they mowed the NADS down, winning game #3. Again, the NADS only needed one more victory to assure themselves the GOLD. Once again ADA County came out firing, dropping NADS like flys, sealing another victory sending them into the final game tied 2 games each. The gymnasium was roaring with energy and excitement. The local papers were covering the event, the chairman of the games was their, plus the families, friends and all 200+ athletes were awaiting the out come of the final game.

This was it, the moment of TRUTH. ADA County captain was overhead saying, "this is what we have worked for, now let's bring home the GOLD. The NADS said, "not ready to go out like this!" All competitors lined up on the line and the judge called out, "Hands on the Line 3 2 1 Dodgeball. It was like watching Gladiators go at it in battle. Athletes were jumping in the air doing the splits avoiding balls between their legs. Other team members were performing Matrix movements as they leaned backwards as the ball breezed by their heads. The crowd was in a frenzy routing for the local team of the NADS. When the smoke cleared and as the last ball was fired, and as the last body fell to the ground, the ADA County team was determined the CHAMPIONS! Both teams met at the center of the court and shook hands and gave their fellow officers a pat on the back.

At the end of the day we saw over 200 Police, SWAT, Secret Service, and Firemen give everything they had on the court, just like they do each and every day on the job. We want to Congratulate every team for showing up and be such good sports. We want to congratulate ADA County for winning the Gold Medal, NADS for winning the Silver Medal and Swatty Balls from Pasadena for winning the Bronze Medal.
